Join the Martha’s Vineyard Bird Club for a late October walk in Aquinnah, when autumn migration is winding down, but the possibilities remain exciting. With fewer leaves, brisk coastal winds, and dramatic cliffs overlooking the Atlantic, this is a prime time to look for lingering migrants, arriving winter birds, and pelagic species moving along the coast.
Birds we might see include late-season raptors such as red-tailed hawk, northern harrier, merlin, and peregrine falcon cruising the cliffs and open fields. Shrubby areas may host yellow-rumped warbler, palm warbler, white-throated sparrow, field sparrow, and dark-eyed junco, while open ground could possibly turn up American pipit. Offshore scanning may reveal northern gannet, scoters, common eider, red-throated loon, and other migrating seabirds. With luck, we may encounter razorbill or other true harbingers of winter.
This walk is open to birders of all experience levels and offers a chance to experience the Vineyard’s rugged beauty during a quieter, atmospheric season. Dress warmly for wind and cold, bring binoculars (and a scope if you have one), and be ready for late-fall surprises along the cliffs of Aquinnah.
