Bundle up and join the Martha’s Vineyard Bird Club for a late November walk at Squibnocket Pond Reservation South, a peaceful coastal and freshwater habitat that attracts a mix of lingering migrants and early winter visitors. Even in the chill of late fall, this area offers rewarding birding with open water, marsh edges, and woodland patches.
Birds we might see include American black duck, mallard, hooded merganser, and common goldeneye on the pond, while marshes and edges may host song sparrow, savannah sparrow, white-throated sparrow, and dark-eyed junco. Keep an eye on the skies for red-tailed hawk, northern harrier, and the occasional Cooper’s hawk hunting over open fields, and scan the pond and shoreline for belted kingfisher or great blue heron. Offshore and along the coast, we may glimpse common eider, scoters, or other wintering sea ducks.
