Description
Inkberry (Ilex glabara) is a versatile native evergreen shrub that provides year-round structure, glossy green foliage, and a valuable resource for pollinators. Its dense branching provides cover and nesting habitat, while its berries feed birds in fall and winter. It makes an excellent native alternative to non-native evergreen shrubs for hedges, borders, and naturalized landscapes.
Easily grown in medium to wet, well-drained to poorly drained soils in full sun to part shade. It prefers acidic soils and performs particularly well in moist conditions. It tolerates salt spray and coastal conditions.
Typically grows 5–10 feet tall and 4–8 feet wide.
